INTRALESIONAL STEROID INJECTIONS

Steroid injections (also known as intralesional corticosteroid injections) are a safe and effective dermatological treatment for certain inflammatory skin conditions. They are commonly used to treat types of hair loss (alopecia) as well as raised or thickened scars such as keloids and hypertrophic scars.

As a Consultant Dermatologist in London, Dr Kentley has extensive experience in performing steroid injections, tailoring treatment to each patient’s condition for the best possible results.

What Are Steroid Injections?

Steroid injections deliver a small dose of corticosteroid medicine directly into the affected area of skin or scalp. This helps reduce inflammation at the site and encourages normal healing or hair regrowth.

Unlike steroid tablets, intralesional injections target only the affected area, minimising systemic side effects, and are able to penetrate deeper into the skin than creams.

Steroid Injections for Alopecia

Steroid injections are widely used in alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing patchy hair loss.

  • How it works: The steroid calms inflammation around the hair follicle, allowing hair to regrow.

  • Treatment sessions: Usually given every 4–6 weeks, depending on response.

  • Results: Many patients see visible hair regrowth after several sessions.

  • Best for: Small patches of alopecia areata (not typically suitable for widespread hair loss).

Steroid Injections for Scars

Steroid injections can flatten and soften keloid scars and hypertrophic scars, which are caused by excessive collagen production during wound healing. Sometimes this can be combined with laser treatments to improve outcomes.

  • How it works: The injection reduces scar tissue formation and inflammation.

  • Benefits: Scars become flatter, paler, and less itchy or uncomfortable.

  • Treatment sessions: Often repeated every 4–8 weeks for several months.

  • Best for: Raised scars after surgery, trauma, acne, or piercings.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • The procedure is quick and performed in the clinic.

  • A fine needle is used to inject the steroid into the affected area.

  • Discomfort is usually minimal; numbing cream can be applied if needed.

  • Patients can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.

Possible Side Effects

Steroid injections are generally well tolerated, but possible side effects include:

  • Temporary thinning or lightening of the skin at the injection site

  • Small visible blood vessels

  • Discomfort or tenderness for a day or two

  • Rarely, infection at the injection site

All treatments are performed by a consultant dermatologist to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness.
