INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive dermatological treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target pigment, redness, and uneven skin tone. It is not a laser, but a light-based technology that can improve the appearance of certain skin concerns in a safe, controlled way.

As a Consultant Dermatologist in London, Dr Kentley has experience in the use of IPL for treatment of a wide range of skin concerns.

What Can IPL Help With?

IPL may be recommended for:

  • Sun damage and uneven pigmentation

  • Freckles and age spots

  • Facial redness and thread veins

  • Rosacea-associated redness

  • General improvement in skin tone and texture

How IPL Works

  • IPL devices emit pulses of light that are absorbed by specific targets in the skin, such as melanin (pigment) or haemoglobin (redness).

  • This process helps break down excess pigment, reduce visible blood vessels, and promote clearer, more even skin.

  • IPL is usually more gentle than lasers, so downtime tends to be minimal.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • A consultation is required first to confirm that IPL is appropriate for your skin type and concern.

  • During treatment, a handheld device is applied to the skin, delivering light pulses.

  • Most patients describe a mild stinging or snapping sensation, sometimes local anaesthetic cream is used but this is not always required.

  • Sessions typically last 20–40 minutes, depending on the treatment area.

  • Multiple sessions may be required for best results.

Aftercare and Recovery

  • Mild redness or warmth may occur immediately after treatment, settling within a few hours to a day.

  • Some darkening of pigmented spots can occur before they fade naturally.

  • Patients should avoid sun exposure and use broad-spectrum sunscreen following treatment.
